Abstract

In the paper, the unwritten moral teachings of Ludwig Wittgenstein, characterized by its author as fundamentally unverbal, are compared with the main semantic intent of Samuel Beckett’s novels, in which the connection between silence and speaking is emphasized as an existential problem. Comparative analysis is carried out in several directions and involves some controversial issues, which in the modeled dialogue between Beckett and Wittgenstein receive a comprehensive coverage. In the field of attention are the following principal points: the phenomenon of meaninglessness (both authors interpret it as an intermediate zone in the transition from speaking to silence); collapse of illusions about language as a guarantor of the world’s rationality; the question of the linguistic construction of any knowledge, including scientific knowledge; eliminating of the logical division of speech into true and false; dependence of the subject (and the very subjectivity) on the power of language. The heritage of two iconic figures of the twentieth century considered from this point of view shows that silence of a language, that plays a fundamental role in shaping the image of the world, represents a value category of a different type of ethics. The apophatic paradigm proposed by Beckett and Wittgenstein can be considered as an alternative to traditional moral doctrines.
