Abstract

The article devoted to Vyacheslav Ivanov’s and Pavel Florensky’s views on antique religion and ancient philosophy. The author of article analyzes Ivanov’s and Florensky’s original concepts and interpretations. Ivanov’s and Florensky’s works were big contribution to study of ancient culture. Ivanov investigated the phenomenon of antique religion on the example of Dionysus’s cult. In the lectures «Hellenic religion of the suffering god» and the book «Dionysus and pra-dionysism» Ivanov offered the concept of antique religion: Ancient Greek religiousness consisted of pra-dionysism’s elements and Dionysus’s cult became apogee in religious development. Florensky investigated religious origins of ancient Greek philosophy and came to the conclusions about completed cycle of philosophical development based on paganism. Florensky’s reflections about antique religion and ancient philosophy matter not only for history of philosophy, but also for religious studies. Florensky showed the transition from the religion to philosophical reflection determined by religious world view. The author of article used unknown text of Florensky’s lecture about Hellenism with the conclusions about the relation between Hellenism and Christianity. Ivanov and Florensky offered two approaches to research of antique religion and ancient philosophy. They used synthetic methodology and the material from different areas of scientific knowledge (archeology, history, art criticism, philosophy, theology, philology, natural sciences, etc.). Ivanov and Florensky created two concepts and formulated the ideas of religious and philosophical development based on the interpretations of ancient Greek world view.
