Abstract

The article presents an analytical review of the work Logos, the Language of Adam and Wharf. Linguistic Aspects of the Intellectual Revolution of the 17th Century written by M. K. Petrov (1923–1987). The article shows that the questions of the categorical structure of the language and the differences between the inflectional and analytic languages, considered by Petrov, make it possible to substantially supplement and clarify the concepts of linguistic relativism and cultural diversity. Historical, philosophical and historical-cultural erudition allowed Petrov to discern a historical fact of linguistic, cultural and even wider – civilizational (since every civilization that ever existed is an embodied type of culture) relativity through these issues, and to see science as a central link in the European cultural project that cannot be explained from the point of view of panlogism and through a historical retrospective.

The linguistic aspects of the intellectual revolution of the 17th century, researched by the author,, shed light on the relationship of late scholasticism to Aristotle, on the internal transformation of theology, which turns into "natural theology" and opens the door to natural science. The picture of the emergence of experienced natural science, created by the author, has not lost its relevance to this day. The main areas of research are focused on the analysis of Aristotle, Bacon and Hobbes texts, substantiating the differences between inflectional analytic languages. Thanks to the published materials, Petrov's views on Aristotle, Bacon and Hobbes and the theoretical assumptions of experimental science in Europe are not only concretized, but also the general reconstruction of the Western cultural tradition, which the intellectual revolution of the 17th century.
