- Abstract
- The article deals with the creation of the image of the Inca Viracocha in Spanish-language texts of the colonial period. Traditionally, in the writings of Inca history, he was presented as a coward who fled Cuzco during the invasion of the chanks, the victory over which his son Pachacutec initiated the creation of the Inca Empire. Based on the available sources, however, it can be concluded that Pachacutec actually attributed his father's victories to himself. If we take into account the information of all the authors who report about Viracocha, it turns out that it was He who created the foundations of the Empire. The idea of it that is ingrained in historiography is only the result of an arbitrary selection of sources.
