Abstract
The article is dedicated to maritime motifs in the art of the Chimu culture in South America (X-XV centuries). On the base of the analysis of the most popular forms of art (ceramics, wall reliefs, jewelry) the author identifies two main themes connected to the sea. They are images of real exist maritime animals and images of mythological characters that combine the features of real creatures. The conclusion is about the important role of the sea in the worldview of the Chimu people and that this culture had a strong iconographic tradition continued earlier and offering new solutions.
