Abstract

The indigenous peoples of Mexico have been object of government policy aimed at their political, economic and cultural subordination during the colonial times. The situation didn`t changed significantly over the following periods of the Mexican history and the government applied a special policy towards the autochthonous population that didn`t take into consideration their civilizational differences and their own potential for development. Emergence of indigenous organizations in the last quarter of the XX century predetermined the native peoples becoming independent political actors. The present article investigates the changes in relations between the government and indigenous peoples of Mexico in the end of XX – beginning of the XXI century.
