Abstract
Canonical works of literature are regarded as inviolable criterion, an example or a guide for new generations of writers. However, the importance given to them cannot and does not exist apart from the context, which constructs meanings of the texts and their structures. Thus, the context is important for shaping of the canon. On the other hand, the canonical texts themselves are exposed to serious processing, which, at first glance, destroys them. This article traces the procedure of adaptation of Chekhov’s canonical text – The Seagull – which, however, does not lead to destruction, but rather allows the text to enter into the new reality and precede its existence of the sacred works.
