Abstract
The subject of this article is the U.S. intervention in Mexico, 1916-1917. While its immediate aim was fighting the Mexican rebels under Francisco Villa, the Wilson administration pursued far-reaching goals. These included the desire to force Venustiano Carranza’s government of Mexico to respect the privileges of American business and to convince those interested in the ability of the White House to provide national security. General Pershing’s Punitive Expedition became the pick of confrontation between the United States and revolutionary Mexico, and a peaceful outcome required great diplomatic efforts on the part of Washington.
