- Abstract
- This article provides a broad overview and analysis of Canada’s diplomatic relations with Latin America and the Caribbean. It argues that in this part of the world Canada tries to present itself as an alternative to the US and the economic nationalism exemplified by Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, offering a third path. The main motivation for a growing Canada’s engagement in Latin America are increasing trade and investment. This region became a centerpiece of Canada’s foreign policy since 2007 when Prime Minister S.Harper proclaimed Canada a country of the Americas and announced a strategy of re-engagement.
