The relation between child individual differences and well-being: the moderation effects of family environment

Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the interactions between child individual differences and family environment in the prediction of well-being in Russian preschool children. Participants were primary caregivers of 652 children aged 2–7 years. The majority of interactions were consistent with a diathesis–stress model: the contributions of Agreeableness to prosocial behavior and Conscientiousness to externalizing problems were larger in the presence of low parental positivity and involvement; the protective effect of Extraversion on internalizing problems and the protective effect of Agreeableness on impact of problems on everyday life were larger in the presence of highly punitive parenting. Consistent with a differential susceptibility model, children low in Openness showed more total problems when faced with low positive parenting and fewer problems when experiencing high-quality parenting.
