Abstract

The article contains the general results of the ethnolinguistic expedition of 2020 to the Debar region (the Republic of North Macedonia). This borderline territory with a population that differs nationally and religiously attracts the researchers’ attention as a zone of high preservation of the archaic phenomena not only in the linguistic features of the Slavic dialect, but also in the folk culture. The Orthodox Slavic population of these places is known under the name of the Mijaks, and the region is called Mijačija. Surrounded by the followers of another religion (Islam) and in the foreign language environment one observes more consistently local traditions and rituals. In the course of the field survey of the Mijačija villages, the unique phenomena of the calendar rituals were recorded, which are not found anywhere else in South Slavia. Mythology and family traditions are also of the ethnolinguistic interest, since they allow us to fit this little-studied area into the general South Slavic context. In this article beside the author’s records are used the previously published ethnolinguistic works.
