Abstract

The article is the first publication of a diary of excavations on three mounds conducted in 1913 under the famous historian of pottery A.V. Filippov in Rylsk uyezd (district), near the estate of his father-in-law V.V. Filimonov. Earlier, this group had been studied by M.N. Speransky, who started a dispute with A.A. Spitsin. The most part of the mound group is lost, and new materials supplement the idea of a hard stage of the establishment of the state in the territories of the Slavic “tribes” in the 11th century in the river Seym region. The diary is essential for understanding the level of education at Moscow Archaeological Institute prior the First World War and the role of local creative communities in the development of archaeology and regional history, as well as for characterizing of A.V. Filippov’s personality and his environment.
