The article analyzes various historical approaches to the concept of democracy in Latin America, provides an overview of political ideas played a fundamental role in the formation of a Latin American ideal of democracy in the nineteenth century. The most important of challenges in the past, manifesting itself in new ways to remain relevant at the present time, as reflected in the political practice of contemporary Latin American countries.
