Abstract
The development of Nicaragua’s Autonomous Regions since 1987 is presented in the article. It is argued that local resource conflicts and the struggle for territory demarcation resulted in the consolidation of Indian and Afro-Caribbean ethnic identities. The authors discuss the ethno-political movements of the Miskito, Rama and Creoles in the context of the construction of the Nicaragua Canal.
