- Abstract
The history of tango is long and complicated. The dance, in it’s main features, came into being at the end of 19th century, in the outskirts and dock districts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, populated by native and emigrant workers. Tango created by a lower class, was however rejected by the high society of Argentina and Uruguay. When this South American dance appeared in Europe, the Catholic Church stood up against it. This article tells us about the battles around Tango until it received the universal recognition.
