- Abstract
- The article examines recent presidential elections in Portugal, which resulted in a new term of incumbent President Anibal Cavaco Silva who was re-elected. The elections took place against the backdrop of economic crisis and the falling popularity of the socialist government. Their results revealed the existing problems in the left political spectrum, shakiness of the positions and errors of the current government and Prime Minister, identified new trends in the attitudes of the electorate. Elections have confirmed the need to modernize the existing political system, in particular, the electoral legislation. The relationship between the different institutions of the executive power became the main theme of the presidential campaign.
