Abstract
This article examines the regime of the political government of Antarctica, the role and the importance of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 for the international cooperation in the region. It’s noted, at the same time, a number of problems and tensions. The article analyses the territorial claims of the seven nations (UK, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, France, Argentina and Chile). Special attention is given to the role of Russia in the exploration and scientific research of Antarctica, to the actual situation with the Antarctic programs and scientific stations, and to the problems, which are connected with this theme. To the conclusion it’s argued the high level of the international activity in the region and the existence of the potential challenges to the international balance, determined by the Antarctic Treaty.
