Abstract
An overview of the major stages in the history of Brazilian Muslims is presented in the article. The sources for the study of Muslim culture in Bahia since the revolt of the “Males” (1835) are described in brief. The author discusses the revival of Brazilian Islam nowadays and the reinterpretation of its role in the history of the Afro-Brazilians. Special attention is paid to the problems of the conservation of Bahia’s Muslim cultural heritage (written tradition, folklore, material culture).
