- Abstract
- The uprisings in the Alto Peru are the least studied period of Spanish American independence. The events in Chuquisaca and La Paz form part of the commencement of the Iberian-American anti-absolutist revolution, which was also taking form in the Spanish dominions in America. These movements contained both traditional elements and revolutionary tendencies, which led to the War of Independence. Even more than the concepts of the Enlightenment, the traditional Spanish neo-scholastic theories on the sovereignty of the people were the ideological basis for American emancipation.
