Abstract
The first native Vietnamese woodcuts of official historical literature and Confucian canons date back to the period no later than the end of the Chang Dynasty (1225-1400), their distribution went in parallel with the strengthening of neo-Confucianism in the country and the establishment of the system of state examinations. From the very beginning, this was done jointly by the state and independent artisans: future texts were prepared under the guidance of senior officials, and the actual production of boards was entrusted to "private owners", who could also make additional copies of woodcuts for sale. At the beginning of the XIX century, when the Nguyen dynasty came to power (1802-1945), the printing of such texts completely passed into the hands of "private owners''it was only under Emperor Minmang (1820-1840) that the monopoly on the production of woodcuts of official historical texts and Confucian canons again passed to the state, but this literature continued to be accessible to the general reader and to be the object of purchase and sale.
