- Abstract
- The article is a study of the traditional house decorative carving, one of the most salient and characteristic areas of traditional woodcraft in the South Urals region. The author draws on an array of data from archival materials to museum collections and to field research findings in interpreting stylistic traits of the decorative carving typical for the nineteenth and early twentieth century constructions in the region. Materials on adjacent regions, such as those of Siberia, the Russian North, the Volga region, and Bashkiria, are analyzed for comparison purposes as well.
