- Abstract
- The article examines cultural practices of Ulan-Ude's youth in the post-Soviet period. Drawing on participant observation, interview, and other data, the author argues that there may be singled out a community of informal youth in town, which does not manifest explicit distinctions between styles yet does oppose itself to a community of rural, "conventional" and criminalized youth. It shapes its own group identity by distinguishing itself from the "rest" of the youth through a cultural factor.
