- Abstract
- The article is based on some new archival sources revealing several aspects of the Russian-Ukrainian relations, which were connected with the election and consecration of the metropolitan of Kiev in 1707-1708. It was Peter the Great, who decisively intervened in the election process on the side of loazaf Krokowski, while Hetman Ivan Mazepa supported the candidacy of Stefan Yavorsky, the locumtenens of the patriarchal see. The Russian involvement in the election, for the first time since 1685, was simultaneously marked by losing the interest to the ceremony of laying on of hands, which was carried out in Moscow in the summer of 1708.
