Abstract
According to the established trend in historiography, relations between the Russian government and the Ukrainian Cossack elite in 1722-1727 made a negative impact on the status of the latter. This was due to the activities of the governmental body called Collegium of Little Russia. There is no evidence in the sources for this assumption though. Political experience gained by the Cossack elite, encouraged them to take a more independent stand during the restoration the post of Hetman.
