Abstract
The paper analyzes the materials of the catalogue of excavations areas in Smolensk compiled by the present authors and including, inter alia, the record of the last two fieldwork seasons of 2014 and 2015. Maps for several chronological sections are drawn. The earliest materials on Smolensk date to the time span between the 8th first half of the 10th century. The finds of this time are concentrated at Sobornaya Gora yet have been encountered in adjacent areas as well. This discovery calls for revisiting a controversial issue of localization of Old Smolensk. Maps drawn for the 11th and 12th-13th demonstrate the growth of the city’s territory.
