Abstract
The article challenges the view that Hoffmann is a second-rate belletrist in the German literary landscape of the Romantic period, when literature was deeply informed by philosophy. It is argued that his writings reflect the dynamics of the German aesthetic thought, which culminated to a crisis both in the romantic worldview and in romanticist method.
