Авторы статьи анализируют программы основных претендентов в кандидаты на пост президента США от Республиканской и Демократической партий в пунктах, касающихся вопросов иммиграционной реформы. Тема рассматривается в контексте общей ситуации с иммигрантским населением США (включая незаконных иммигрантов), сложившейся в середине второго десятилетия XXI века. В настоящее время численность и доля иммигрантов в составе американского населения достигли рекордных уровней за всю американскую историю. Реакцией на это, подчёркивают авторы, стали диаметрально противоположные планы реформирования иммиграционной системы, выдвинутые ведущими претендентами в кандидаты от обеих партий. Их планы и подходы к проблеме оставляют мало надежд на то, что в результате президентских выборов в ноябре 2016 г. будет найден взаимоприемлемый компромисс по вопросам дальнейшего развития иммиграционного законодательства США.
