Abstract
The article analyzes the approaches to immigration reform in the programs of the main candidates for U.S. president from the Republican and Democratic parties. They are considered in the context of the overall situation with the immigrant population in the United States, including illegal immigrants, in the middle of the second decade of the XXI century. It is stated that at present the number and proportion of immigrants in the composition of the U.S. population reached record levels in American history. Diametrically opposed plans to reform the immigration system, put forward by the leading candidates from both parties, have become the reaction to this situation. Plans and approaches of Republicans and Democrats to reform the U.S. immigration system leaves little hope that it will be found mutually acceptable compromise between Republicans and Democrats on the further development of U.S. immigration.
